I lived in St. Catharines for 10 years. Me and my girlfriend at the time went to every scary thing in the area. Not once did anything creepy happen, although at the Blue Ghost tunnel our batteries died within about 15 minutes and then came back to full charge when we were out of the area

Reptiles have numerous biological methods for surviving in cold weather. If some sort of crocodilian was native to the region ages ago, and then the climate gradually got colder and colder, nothing could be more normal and predictable than that the species would adapt to the changing climate. That is the very essence of evolution. Reptiles make it through cold winters by hibernating (brumation), going into torpor (diapause), and by having natural anti-freeze substances in their body fluids. If winters got longer and colder, some individuals would survive and some wouldn't. The survivors would breed hardier offspring who would have some chance of surviving even longer and colder winters, and so on. Nothing about this is surprising or hard to believe, and certainly not supernatural. On another note, alligators live a long time, and if they spend three-quarters of the year asleep, I would imagine they would live even longer. We might find specimens as much as 200 or even 300 years old in cold waters.

Another explanation for "changelings" may be celiac disease. When parents first introduce solid food, the first food given to baby, then and now, is usually some sort of grain based matter. If the baby turns from a sweet, rosy little cherub to a screaming, furious, colicky gremlin, it might very well be because their GI tract has been thrown into chaos by gluten. Celiac disease wasn't understood until the Dutch famine in WWII. Wheat was scarce, so people with celiac disease actually had the opportunity, for the first time in their lives, to go a few days without bread. To everyone's astonishment they got better, and then when the famine was over and they reintroduced bread, all the symptoms came back. That was when doctors finally got a handle on what causes celiac disease, and figured out how to treat it. Prior to that, no one had ever caught on that wheat (and rye and barley) was the problem because bread was "the staff of life" and no one ever thought to question its perfect beneficence. Before WWII, children with celiac disease were usually diagnosed with the vague term "failure to thrive." They didn't grow, they became pale and weak, their mental development was delayed or even went backwards, and they almost always died before reaching adulthood. (I'm not at all discounting the modern problem of quackcines. I have seen that damage happen right in front of my own eyes and I know that it's very real.)

There are several videos about the Nahanni Valley. The claims that some animals long thought to be extinct are living can't be completely ruled out. It's a vast mostly unexplored area. Has anyone climbed up into and explored the caves above the river? It's said less than 1,000 people visit each year. Other sources state the RCMP have closed sections of this park. It makes sense, to me anyway, that the possibility of living specimens exist in the inner regions. I am fascinated by all of these stories. I wonder if you have actually gone there or just wrote your book based on info gleaned in other books or online?

The forest fire.....You just solved a mystery for me! I chase the CPR trains for photos in along Lake Superior. One of my favorite spots on the sub is Firehill and I always wondered why. There is a big hill, and 10 years later putting in rail, a forest fires damage would still be seen. Very cool to know the history of a spot I spend so much time in. Thanks!

I was thinking the native people should have a lot of monster stories going back thousands of years. Especially in BC if the story is correct that their ancestors migrated from Asia 11,000 years ago. Alaska and BC would have the oldest traces of that migration and settlements and experiences in the “ New World”. I come from BC and as a kid, when I lived there in the Okanagan heard of course Ogopogo snd Saquatch stories but also once from a teacher about the Okanagan Light that shone down the valley. I have not found any other reference to it.

I come from BC and never heard of most of these except the guy from Duncan who said he was going to be picked up by a UFO. I got a strange phone call about that after a letter I wrote to the Victoria newspaper which was published questioning the story. That had to be about 1988 after which I left Canada. I can tell you what I remember if you are interested.

Hate to be that guy, but most of these realistic or more grounded stories are explained by the copious amount of drugs the natives did. They call it medicine, and to an extent it is, but hallucigenics and psychedelics explain what they see and experience in the more out there stories. A lot of other drugs will make it hard to kill someone because they become numb to pain and some drugs thicken the blood so they don't bleed out immediately from fatal wounds. Giving the appearance of an immortal warrior.
